Cape Grand Tour
Back roads and mountain passes along the Cape's finest coastline, created for riders who want all the beauty, adventure and authentic experiences of an XMoto expedition, experienced exclusively on tar roads.
Ten unforgettable days along the Cape's finest back roads and mountain passes — from Struisbaai, the southernmost point on the African continent, along the Garden Route to Addo's open plains, with a choice between the Bloukrans Bungy and the Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour, Knysna's renowned motorcycle museum and a sunset lagoon cruise, before the passes carry you home. Anyone can book a hotel. We choose working farms, family-run retreats, nights beneath canvas and hosts who make every stop part of the adventure. This isn't a lesser expedition. It's the same wild country, ridden your way.
Ten Days on the Best Tar in the Cape.
The expedition opens along the Atlantic seaboard — Camps Bay Drive and Chapman's Peak first, then Clarence Drive hugging the coast through Rooi Els and Pringle Bay, on through Hermanus and Gansbaai. The day ends at Struisbaai, the southernmost tip of Africa, land run out beneath you.
North through Bredasdorp and Napier, then Caledon before the road climbs into the Hemel en Aarde Valley, wine country worth its name. Villiersdorp and Aan de Doorns lead on to Robertson and Ashton, Montagu for the night.
A day built almost entirely of passes — Wildehondskloofhoogte, Op de Tradouw, then Tradouw Pass down and back up before Barrydale. Huisrivier Pass carries you on through Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn, down to Mossel Bay and the coast.
The bikes stay put. A day out on the water — deep-sea fishing or shark cage diving, your choice — then a local fisherman teaches you to cook your catch, fisherman's tales and local music around the fire as the sun goes down.
Up the Outeniqua Pass and on to Uniondale, then the final stretch of Route 62 — the part most travellers never find, through Misgund, Joubertina and Kareedouw — before dropping down to Cape St Francis for the night.
A shorter day inland, through Patensie and Hankey, with a game drive at Addo Elephant Park before settling in for the night.
A morning in Addo Elephant Park before the R102 carries you to Bloukrans, where the brave take the bungee and everyone else takes the canopy tour. Nature's Valley on the way through, Plettenberg Bay for the night.
The shortest ride of the trip, and the fullest day. A wolf sanctuary, a raptor rescue centre, farm stalls and the Knysna Heads all sit along the way — explore as many as you like, at your own pace. Before the evening's sunset cruise on the Knysna Lagoon, the group stops at Knysna's motorcycle museum, the kind of place that brings back a flood of childhood memories. Overnight Knysna.
The turn for home. Sedgefield and Wilderness along the coast, then George and back up the Outeniqua Pass, through Oudtshoorn and Huisrivier Pass to Barrydale.
The longest final stretch of any day, and worth every kilometre — Op de Tradouw and Wildehondskloofhoogte again, then the Koo Valley road into Rooihoogte, Burgers and Uitkomst Passes. Ceres, Mitchell's Pass, and Bain's Kloof carry you home through Philadelphia to Melkbosstrand.
Anyone can book a hotel.
At XMoto, we believe where you stay should be as memorable as the roads you ride. That's why, wherever possible, we choose working farms, where evenings are spent around the fire sharing stories with your hosts and mornings begin surrounded by the landscapes you've come to explore.
When a farm stay isn't available, we carefully select local retreats that offer the same warmth, character and authentic hospitality. Every overnight stop adds another unforgettable chapter to your adventure.
No two overnight stops are ever the same. One night you might be enjoying a traditional lamb spit braai beneath the stars. Another could see you sampling award-winning wines, learning how locally produced olive oil is crafted, or gathered around a crackling bonfire listening to a local musician and storyteller. The next morning, you may wake to the sound of a rooster crowing, goats bleating in the distance or ducks gliding across the farm dam before collecting your own fresh eggs for breakfast, or simply enjoying a beautifully prepared farm-style breakfast. At some farms, you may even be invited to milk a cow or take part in the daily rhythm of the farm, offering a genuine glimpse into a way of life that few travellers ever experience. These are the moments that can't be found in a hotel and often become the memories you'll treasure long after the journey ends.
The Adventure Doesn't End When the Ride Does.
Some moments are simply too good to leave to memory alone. Throughout your expedition, we'll professionally capture your journey using high-resolution cameras, 360° action cameras and drones (where permitted). From epic mountain passes and wildlife encounters to the laughter around a campfire and the friendships forged along the way, we'll document the moments that make your adventure unique.
After your expedition, you'll receive a professionally curated collection of high-resolution photographs and cinematic videos, allowing you to relive the experience and share your journey with family and friends for years to come.
Because the greatest adventures deserve to be remembered.
Your Adventure, On Your Schedule.
Unlike traditional motorcycle tours that operate on fixed annual departure dates, XMoto believes your adventure should fit your schedule, not the other way around.
Our expeditions are built around rider demand. Once the first rider or group confirms their preferred departure date with a deposit, that expedition is officially opened and additional riders are invited to join until all available places are filled.
This approach gives our guests greater flexibility while ensuring every departure is carefully planned around the people taking part. It also allows us to work closely with our accommodation partners, local hosts and experience providers to deliver the exceptional journey every rider expects.
If you already have your own riding group, we can also arrange a private departure exclusively for you, subject to availability.
Whether you're travelling solo, with a partner or as part of a group, every XMoto expedition receives the same meticulous planning, authentic experiences and personal attention that define our adventures.
How It Works
- Choose the expedition you'd like to experience.
- Tell us your preferred travel dates.
- Once your booking and deposit are confirmed, your departure is opened for additional riders to join.
- We continue accepting bookings until the expedition reaches capacity.
- Final confirmation is provided once the minimum group size has been reached.
- If you'd prefer an exclusive experience, private departures are available for groups on dates that suit you.
Why We Do It This Way
We believe adventures should be shaped around riders, not calendars.
Rather than publishing dozens of fixed departures months in advance, we build each expedition around you. This allows us to remain flexible, carefully curate every journey and continue delivering the authentic, boutique experiences that make XMoto different.
It's a more personal way to travel, ensuring every expedition feels less like joining a tour and more like becoming part of an adventure.
